Michelin, tire supplier for all of the withdrawals, blamed the FIA. The FIA blamed Michelin. Ferrari blamed the other teams. The other teams blamed Ferrari. The Speedway blamed the sanctioning body. The sanctioning body questioned The Speedway's layout. But here's the thing. The good people of the grandstands didn't care about all of that. They just knew one certain, undeniable truth. ................They got screwed

But in America, Formula One has always been limited to a fiercely followed cult sport, alongside cycling, triathlons, and cricket. It is soccer without the short pants and yellow cards.

During race weekends no drivers have bothered making appearances at the local mall to sign autographs, no show cars have been on display on 16th St., and the drivers and teams have always been painstakingly kept from any possible human contact with the people that have plunked down their cash to see them.

So it was that on June 19, 2005, the snobitorium that is Formula One racing set fire to the one remaining bridge that had long teetered over the Atlantic and into the United States. And they did it in person at our most cherished racetrack in front of the last remaining group of Americans who cared anything about them ... their quickly shrinking ticket-buying public. Hey, do us all a favor, fellas. Stop insulting us and move this date to a nation where they don't seem to mind putting up with you.
