New qualifying regs for road courses

CART aims to limit 'dead' time with immediate effect

CART will modify its road course qualifying rules with immediate effect to eliminate idle time in qualifying sessions. With drivers limited to 15 laps, most teams have held their cars in the pits until only 20 or 30 minutes remain in the 60-minute sessions.

The new rule will stipulate a short open practice followed by a 35-minute session, with 30 minutes of guaranteed green flag time. The 15-lap limit will remain the same.

"We wanted to find a way to give the fans more on-track action during qualifying, and the practice session also allows us to put down some compatible rubber on the track prior to qualifying," stated CART's Vice President of Operations, John Lopes. "We feel these changes will help the teams as well and provide more enjoyment for the fans."
