Ferrari's decision to hand victory in Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix to their top driver Michael Schumacher over No 2 Rubens Barrichello brought an avalanche of protests from newspapers, fans and even the Brazilian president.
"Red Card" headlined the French sports daily L'Equipe on its front page above a photograph taken in the instant after Barrichello had hit the brakes to allow Schumacher to pass him just before the finish line.
"It could have been a magnificent double, but instead it was a monumental gaffe," said L'Equipe of the Ferrari decision to further Schumacher's world title ambitions by ensuring he got the four extra points for first place.
"Ferrari Covered in Shame," wrote Le Parisien, adding that the scandal in Spielberg would forever tarnish the reputation of the four-times world champion Schumacher.
Outrage also from France Soir which said that Ferrari's action was "shameful, scandalous, depressing and unworthy of all those who love sports."
The same tone was taken in the British press with The Sun headlining "Day F1 Died of Shame." The tabloid said it had been flooded with calls and e-mails from angry Formula One fans. "This is the last race I'll ever watch. We have a bet every time, but this was disgusting," wrote one such fan.
"Shame on Schu," ran the Daily Mail predicting a "magnitude of voices raised globally in condemnation of the part he (Schumacher) played in a crassly cynical sporting 'fix' orchestrated by his Ferrari team with complete disregard for fair play and decency."
There was no respite either for Ferrari from their home base in Italy with Gazzetta dello Sport writing "Ferrari throws it all away. It could have been a great day for Ferrari. Unfortunately it turned into a nasty day of shame.”
The Italian press were particularly disdainful of Ferrari Sporting Director Jean Todt who was ultimately responsible for taking the decision and understanding of Schumacher who had expressed his opposition to it.
In Barrichello's homeland of Brazil, former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi lashed out saying that he would never have let Schumacher past. ”It's a disgrace, an absurdity.”
Even Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso got involved saying: "Today Brazilians are unanimous. Rubens Barichello is the winner of the Austrian Grand Prix. The trophy is his," he said in an official communique late Sunday.
