Ducati också verkar det som...
ans of motorcycle manufacturers Ducati are in for a treat next season when the Italian manufacturers will be joining the MotoGP championship. Ducati have announced their plans to compete with a four-stroke bike in the 2003 championship and at present are looking to recruit a rider from the grand prix series.
It is believed that the Italian team is keen on signing reigning world champion Valentino Rossi, or even fellow Italian driver Loris Capirossi. However Rossi signed a two-year contract with Honda at the beginning of this season, and Capirossi, who has in the past been approached by Ducati to ride in the SuperBike series, is contract to Honda Pons for now.
Another Italian driver, Max Biaggi, has also been linked to a possible Ducati ride next season as it is a widely known fact that he is unhappy with the four-stroke Yamaha YZR provided for him this season. But for now until they have decided upon a rider, the team will be using their SuperBike riders to test their GP bike, which is expected to be unveiled during the Italian GP at Mugello on May 30.
"Next year we will take on the Japanese and Aprilia with our four-stroke in MotoGP and we have high hopes," Ducati boss Carlo di Biagio told Italian news service ANSA. "We want to be competitive right from the start and, why not, get on the podium. We have nine months of very intensive development tests ahead of us which we will carry out by giving the GP bike to our superbike riders - (world champion Troy) Bayliss, (Ben) Bostrom and (Ruben) Xaus who will take turns on it. In addition to these riders, who already have experience of riding a four-stroke, we will choose a rider from among those already racing in MotoGP. We must wait until November to see who to sign up. It will depend on may things.”
Di Biagio was keen to stress that the team's plans to joins the MotoGP championship would not mean they would be leaving the SuperBike series, as that has provided them with much of their success in the past.
"We will continue to have our own team (in superbikes)...we will not leave this championship which has seen us grow, has made us popular and helped us sell many bikes," Di Biagio added.
